Notes
The geographic distribution of patents is based on the residence of the inventor whose name appears first on the patent. Per capita patents issued per 10,000 population is based on the number of utility (invention) patents issued in an area divided by the population of the area and then multiplied by 10,000. For example, in 2004, there were 12.12 patents issued for each 10,000 persons in Austin.

Notes
Companies in Texas report their revenue (sales) to the Comptroller of Public Accounts (CPA). Texas companies must collect Texas sales tax on the taxable portion of their sales.  The sales data are aggregated into major sectors and released on a quarterly basis by the CPA.  This unpublished data includes total sales and "sales subject to sales tax" and the number of reporting outlets.  The CPA's staff advised the Bureau of Business Research (BBR) to use the "sales subject to sales tax" data in this index; therefore, these are the only data we are including. Even though these data are published quarterly, the data in the Austin Index will only be updated once each year, using the third quarter data for each year. Data for the fourth quarter sometimes includes sales data from companies that report their sales only once a year; therefore, that data are not representative quarterly data.
