Notes: The tables in this section include annual estimates for 1981-2005 prepared by the US Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census. The decennial Census of Population and Housing occurs every ten years to count the population and housing units for the entire US. The decennial census used both short- and long-form questionnaires to gather information about people and housing units. The census data shows the population as of April 1, 1980. The estimated population is the computed number of people living in an area (resident population) as of July 1 of each year other than 1980. County population estimates are created by starting with the decennial census figure and updating that figure with information on births, deaths, domestic migration (in/out flows with other counties in the US), and international migration (in/out flows with other countries) that have occurred between the census date and the date of the population estimate. For more information on the methods used by the US Census Bureau to product population estimates is found at Population Estimates and Projections Methodologies.
