CleanTX Forum
Clean Tech: After the Gold Rush
CleanTX ForumRemember the 2008 gold rush? That was the banner year for clean tech investing. Not only did venture capital firms invest more than $6 billion in clean tech companies, but the Federal "stimulus" package included massive investments in clean energy: $11 billion for smart grid projects, $2 billion for electric car battery programs, $3.4 billion for "clean coal."
Now all that's over. In 2010 VCs invested $1 billion less in clean tech than they had in 2008. And Federal money? Forget about it. Our May 25 CleanTX Forum addresses this new funding environment. Our panel features the traditional sources of private capital, venture capitalists and angel investors. But it also includes representation from some of the "new" sources of capital that clean tech companies may need to engage - strategic investors from the "old" energy industry, private equity firms looking for consolidation opportunities, and non-stimulus sources of public money.
Moderated by Austin Technology Incubator Director Isaac Barchas.

John Sibley Butler on How "Great Cities" Become "Great" —
Through Innovation, Technology Transfer and Economic Development
Since ancient times, cities and regions have provided the eco-systems for people to engage in economic activity and live an exceptional life. This presentation will focus on how "great cities" become "great" by showing the relationship between innovation (inventions, technology transfer to the business world) and economic development. Over the last thirty years, Austin, Texas has developed a model that is serving as best practices for America and cities across the globe. Dr. Butler will explain how Austin was "built," and how the "Austin Model" is being taken globally. Austin will be placed in the context of great regions from 2000 B.C. to present as the philosophical traditions of "great" cities are explored.

CleanTX Forum
Smart Grid "The Customer Side of the Meter"
IC²'s Austin Technology Incubator sponsors the CleanTX Forum in a discussion of the barriers and sources of change towards a smarter energy system. Topics discussed will address three primary sources of change: (1) new business models and consumer acceptance of smart-grid technologies, (2) institutions that facilitate deployment of smart grids and reduction of electricity demand, and (3) promoting interoperability of smart-grid technology standards.
"Production of electricity in the United States is entering a period of dramatic transformation. Yet, despite broad-based support for a smarter energy grid in many states and the federal government, a combination of socioeconomic, technological, and legal barriers sometimes impede deployment of smart grid systems. The barriers include information gaps, capital constraints, poor pricing methods, and outdated laws. Market failures also exist in the form of network effects, high transaction costs, and technology spillovers from investments in learning-by-doing."

Advocacy: Selling Innovative Ideas Within Your Organization
Innovation matters. But like it or not, in every organization, there is the politics of ideas. Before innovations hit the market, they must be sculpted and sold within the innovator's organization. The internal sell always proceeds the external sell. Daly discusses how great advocates for their ideas successfully market them within their organizations, and what it takes to get buy-in for ideas.

EU IP Protection & US Lawsuit Prevention
A Transatlantic Video Conference on Legal Issues for Successful International Market Expansion

The United States—European Union transatlantic economy dominates the world economy with a combined population of the US and EU now approaching 800 million people who generate 50% of world production. Germany is the largest economy and largest exporter in the EU, and Texasis the second largest economy and largest exporter in the US. In both Germany and Texas, small businesses represent 99% of all employer firms, employ half of all private sector employees, pay at least 45% of total private payroll, and have generated 60% to 80% of net new jobs annually over the last decade. Yet, US and EU emerging businesses regard worries about intellectual property (IP) theft and litigation in the US courts as two principal legal issues. This session addresses these topics for German & Texas enterprises, in order to help maximize IP values and prevent lawsuits from devastating their businesses.
