Alumni Spotlight - HelioVolt Corporation

HelioVolt Corporation, based in Austin, Texas, is a manufacturer of a new generation of thin film photovoltaic products based on its proprietary FASST® manufacturing process.  The company’s low-cost, rapid production methods for CIGS synthesis are protected by sixteen issued patents globally.  In 2007, HelioVolt raised over $100M in venture financing to fund the company’s move towards volume production and international expansion, and the company is now building its first factory in the Austin area.

John Langdon, Vice President of Marketing for HelioVolt, graduated from the MSTC program in 2002.  Prior to joining HelioVolt, John was the CEO of a software startup company.  Though HelioVolt was not a result of the MSTC program, John’s early involvement in the company was a direct result of MSTC training.  John began working with the company during the MSTC program and joined as a full time employee a few months after graduation.  In terms of John’s personal accomplishments within HelioVolt, he formulated an overall commercialization strategy, identified markets and market requirements, crafted a strategy to move from the first beachhead market to the long-term wide spread adoption of the technology as a mass market product.  The MSTC program helped John’s career in assisting him to rapidly understand the key criteria for investment in a technology, the time frame for commercialization and the key partners and processes required.

HelioVolt does have a definite plan for moving from today’s large solar farm installations to widespread building integration with photovoltaic systems as an integral part of the building envelope.  HelioVolt believes that building integrated photovoltaic systems will be a thriving industry for several hundred years.
