MSTC students are uniquely prepared to compete in a variety of local, national and even international business plan and entrepreneurship competitions. The list below represents a small fraction of the opportunities in which students may put their skills to practive. Most university-sponsored competitions are held in the spring of each year. As deadlines and entry requirements change on regular basis, please see the link for each individual competition for more information. Moot CorpOften referred to as "the Super Bowl of world business plan competitions," Moot Corp® is a world-renowned competition that simulates the experience of raising venture capital. Held annually at The University of Texas at Austin, students work in teams to take an idea for a new business, develop the idea into a written business plan, develop a presentation and pitch the idea to a panel of entrepreneurs, angel investors and venture capitalists. Idea 2 ProductFounded at The University of Texas at Austin, the I2P competition is for early-stage technoloy commercialization plans.The aim is to investigate unique product ideas using innovative technologies and match them with market demand. The competition is open to all UT Austin students who are interested in technology-focused entrepreneurship. Social InnovationLocated within the LBJ School of Public Affairs, the RGK Center for Philanthropy & Community Service sponsors a competition for full-time students at Texas Universities with entrepreneurial ideas that can change the world. Entering ventures should exist primatily to address a significant social problem. Rice University Business Plan CompetitionOffering one of the richest cash awards among business plan competitions, this annual competition is sponsored by Rice University, providing a unique opportunity for MSTC students in the Houston area. The winner of this competition, like several other regional events, qualifies to move on to the international finals of Moot Corp. Megabucks Entrepreneurship CompetitionSponsored by the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, this annual competition tailors to individuals looking to develop their thoughts and ideas into reality. The $100K Innovation Challenge at Case-WesternNoted as the premier business plan competition in the midwest, winners not only receive a monetary prize, they also have the chance to present their plan to a panel of early-stage venture capitalists.In addition to the opportunity to present, they will receive feedback, international media exposure and the opportunity to network with other potential team members. McGinnis Centure CompetitionSponsored by Carnegie-Mellon University, the competition revolves around new technologies.Winners receive cash prizes, opportunities to pitch to venture capitalists and intellectual property services.Some also receive automatic berth to Moot Corp. New Venture ChampionshipThe New Venture Championship is sponsored by the University of Oregon and is one of the top three business plan competitions in the United States.The NVC offers more than $70,000 in cash prizes. GSAS Harvard Biotech Club Business Plan CompetitionFocusing on biotechnology and life science start-ups, this competition is open to everyone and does not require a Harvard affiliation. Oxford University Business Plan CompetitionThis competition encourages innovative ideas that will assist in solving major social and environmental issues of the 21st century. Peltier New Venture Tyler Business Plan CompetitionStudents involved in the competition will gain access to networks of successful entrepreneurs, lenders and investors, and have the opportunity to learn greater team-building and business planning skills. The contest will also help student teams gain media exposure for their entrepreneurial goals. |
